How was Joseph going to divorce Mary privately if they were not married?
The Birth of Jesus Christ
Mat 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused (betrothed) to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
Mat 1:19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
Mat 1:20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
Mat 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
Mat 1:22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
Mat 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
Mat 1:24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
Mat 1:25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
You must go to Torah to understand! When a man and woman are betrothed it is at that moment they entered into a marriage contract. It was when the grooms father would purchase the bride from the father of the virgin/Bride. We see this with Isaac and Rebekah when Abraham sent his servant to purchase Isaac a bride. This betrothal was a very important part of the marriage process, as well as binding. This was taken very serious, when the contract was signed by the father of the bride and the groom it was binding and would require a divorce if one was found unfaithful, though according to the law they would have been stoned to death.
Gen 24:47 And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands.
Gen 24:48 And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter unto his son.
Gen 24:49 And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.
Gen 24:50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good.
Gen 24:51 Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master’s son’s wife, as the LORD hath spoken.
Gen 24:52 And it came to pass, that, when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth.
Gen 24:53 And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things.
Gen 24:54 And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master.
Gen 24:55 And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.
Gen 24:56 And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.
Gen 24:57 And they said, We will call the damsel, and enquire at her mouth.
Gen 24:58 And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go.
Gen 24:59 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant, and his men.
Gen 24:60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them.
Gen 24:61 And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.
But they are not OFFICIALLY married (made ONE FLESH) until the wedding feast and the consummation (intercourse) takes place.
This is the case with Joseph and Mary, they were betrothed and in order for Joseph to exit the contract he had to DIVORCE HER! But God sent an angel to tell Joseph that no Mary was not guilty of fornication, she was still untouched but was carrying the child of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit over shadowed her as He did the face of the deep at creation. Immediately they married but Joseph knew her not until AFTER the bay was born and the days of purification was finished. Then, Mary became his wife becoming ONE FLESH with Joseph and bear him several more children.
When we say our vows we have made a covenant between one another, in front of God Himself. In the wedding chamber on our wedding night is when God changes us, no longer are we two but become One flesh. Thus the marriage covenant IS sealed BY THE SHEDDING OF blood! The broken hymen proving purity.
Truthfully this is one reason I am absolutely against a child using any kind of feminine product that enters her body.
Deu 22:13 If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her,
Deu 22:14 and lay wanton charges against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say: ‘I took this woman, and when I came nigh to her, I found not in her the tokens of virginity’;
Deu 22:15 then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel’s virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate.
Deu 22:16 And the damsel’s father shall say unto the elders: ‘I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her;
Deu 22:17 and, lo, he hath laid wanton charges, saying: I found not in thy daughter the tokens of virginity; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter’s virginity.’ And they shall spread the garment before the elders of the city.
Deu 22:18 And the elders of that city shall take the man and chastise him.
Deu 22:19 And they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel; and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.
Deu 22:20 But if this thing be true, that the tokens of virginity were not found in the damsel;
Deu 22:21 then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die; because she hath wrought a wanton deed in Israel, to play the harlot in her father’s house; so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee.
This ONLY HAPPENED when a bride who was BETROTHED in a legal contract was found to not be a virgin. Because she was lying concerning her purity as well as her faithfulness. At the time of betrothal remember it was a binding contract and they were considered married.
If a man lies with a virgin that is not betrothed and desires to marry her he must get consent from her father and then pay a dowry.
Exo 22:16 (22:15) And if a man entice a virgin that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely pay a dowry for her to be his wife.
Exo 22:17 (22:16) If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.
Deu 22:28 If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, that is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found;
Deu 22:29 then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he hath humbled her; he may not put her away all his days.
Now if we read and remember the exact WORDS of Christ on this teaching He explicitly says, WHAT GOD HAS JOINED TOGETHER LET NO MAN PUT ASUNDER!
Mar 10:6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.
Mar 10:7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;
Mar 10:8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.
Mar 10:9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
Mar 10:10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.
Mar 10:11 And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.
Mar 10:12 And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.
Released from the Law only through DEATH
Rom 7:1 Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
Rom 7:2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
Rom 7:3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
1Co 7:39 The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.
When does God join man and woman together?
That occurs during INTERCOURSE!
Apostle Paul declares this in 1 Corinthians. That is how God designed it. This why sex outside of marriage is not only “frowned” upon but extremely sinful. Scientist discovered several years back, discovered that a woman carries the DNA of every man she has had sex with. But now if you search it out, SNOPES or Independent Fact Checkers have now said that is untrue. Regardless if her body carries it or not, God knows all and it is all recorded. Our own DNA tells a very clear story of who and what we are, through DNA they can tell exactly what you looked like as a child and as what you will look like in years to come. Your DNA is a telltale sign of the kind of illness’ you will have, your height and weight, hair color etc. Your very own DNA just may be the book of your life which will be opened on the day of Judgment. I wonder.
1Co 6:16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
1Co 6:17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
1Co 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
1Co 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
1Co 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
And regardless what you think, that marriage covenant is a BLOOD COVENANT!
In modern Jewish weddings they actually will use the white ancient proof of virginity cloth that covers the “Chuppah” at the ceremony, then use in on the bed for the wedding night, then bring it out showing proof of virginity for all too see!
If the bride is found not to be a virgin on that night, according to the law proof had to be presented. If there was no blood on the sheets as proof of her virginity then she was STONED TO DEATH! And then he was free to remarry! That was the law.
But because of the hardness of their hearts Moses compromised and instead gave them a letter of divorcement! But Jesus makes it very clear that it was not Him that changed the law, and He proceeds to tell them if you remarry while your spouse is alive you are committing adultery.
Only death can separate what God joined together not a piece of paper, but, death!
Look at Jacob, he fell in love with Rachel and asked specifically for her hand in marriage. Since he did not have riches because he had ran for his life, he asked if he could purchase her by working for her. Laban agreed and Jacob worked 7 years, at the wedding feast all seem on the up and up. After he had his fill of wine he crawled into the dark tent and lay with his virgin. In the morning he found it was not Rachel but her older sister Leah! No divorce was even considered because it was a BINDING BLOOD COVENANT and now he was ONE FLESH with Leah! So he worked 7 more years for Rachel.
Gen 29:18 And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.
Gen 29:19 And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.
Gen 29:20 And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.
Gen 29:21 And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her.
Gen 29:22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.
Gen 29:23 And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.
Gen 29:24 And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid.
Gen 29:25 And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me?
Gen 29:26 And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.
Gen 29:27 Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.
Gen 29:28 And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.
Gen 29:29 And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid.
Gen 29:30 And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.
What Jacob did was later condemned in scripture because of jealousy. Rachel was pretty jealous of Leah, then Leah became jealous of Rachel.
Lev 18:18 And thou shalt not take a woman to her sister, to be a rival to her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her lifetime.
Gen 30:1 And when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and she said unto Jacob: ‘Give me children, or else I die.’
Gen 30:2 And Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel; and he said: ‘Am I in God’s stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?’
Gen 30:15 And she said unto her: ‘Is it a small matter that thou hast taken away my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son’s mandrakes also?’ And Rachel said: ‘Therefore he shall lie with thee to-night for thy son’s mandrakes.’
Yet, still God did not allow a divorce for the deception of marrying the wrong sister.
Some try and distort the Word of God in order to live in sin, some have said that adultery is a reason to be able to remarry but the Word of God DOES NOT SAY THAT. Then others will say they do not need to get “married” that God considers them married already since they have had “sex”. UM…that is not truth at all. God instituted marriage and even the wedding feast, there is an actual ceremony which is the marriage covenant (vows) before God and then on your wedding night the covenant is then sealed and God joins you together making you One.
Many today do not take their Chasity serious at all, sadly.
When my daughter was younger and her best friend was over they asked me about “sex”. I was serving God at the time, though in my third marriage (according to God an adulterous relationship) which I did not know then.
Anyway, sitting on my daughters bedroom floor with them, I told them that their virginity and their virginity of their future husband was a very special gift that can ONLY be given one time in life. That on their wedding night they will exchange this gift and no one else will be able to receive an exact copy of this gift. That is why we cherish our virginity and not give it to anyone accept the one who choose to marry for life.
I wish I would have been told by my momma the importance of this gift. Though I was brutally raped at 16 and my virginity stripped from me. I did marry my first love, my first everything but we committed fornication before our wedding night.
Share with your children from their youth the importance of staying pure absolutely pure. That includes any form of “sex”. Petting, oral, touching nothing is acceptable, to prevent temptations avoid being alone with them.
The marriage covenant was created by God, He is witness to the vows, and He makes you One flesh and sealed it with blood. What God has joined together let no man put asunder.
